The Portland Legacy Fountain will celebrate the diverse cultural legacies that make Portland the vibrant city it is today. We honor the Native Americans who first settled in the area, recount the British, Russian, French, Dutch explorers and early settlers; then the waves of 19th and early 20th century immigrants—Chinese, German, Eastern European, Greek, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Jewish and Scandinavian peoples—all of whom played historically important roles in Portland’s development. The unfolding cultural legacy continues to this day as new immigrant communities arrive and contribute to a dynamic, thriving city.

The inspiration for the Portland Legacy Fountain project is Bill Naito, who before he passed envisioned a monument celebrating Portland’s cultural heritage. The proposed Portland Legacy Fountain will be a central feature of a new plaza, part of the 2003 Waterfront Park Master Plan, which will host open-air markets and large-scale cultural programs. Flanked by Portland’s Saturday Market, Mercy Corps world headquarters, and University of Oregon Portland Center, the plaza will serve as a major Portland gathering place, attracting people at all hours, every day of the week and throughout the year.

At the Portland Legacy Fountain, a presentation will briefly, eloquently tell the story of the city's rich cultural legacy. We will work with the Oregon Historical Society and University of Oregon historians to achieve a clear, fair and accurate presentation. major donors will be recognized in a permanent statement of our shared commitment to honor the cultural legacy inherited by all people of Portland.
